Rumours of a new Jay Z album had been flying around for a while, ever since Beyonce‘s critically-acclaimed Lemonade album dropped. A reply album was rumoured to be in the works but what we got was a line in Fat Joe & Remy Ma‘s official remix of their hit song All The Way Up.
You know you made it when the fact
Your marriage made it is worth millions
Lemonade is a popular drink and it still is
But this was not the reply we were expecting, was it? Then the pic of Swizz and Jay surfaced, fuelling the rumours that an album was actually coming.
4:44 landed with hype that all Jay-Z releases have been accustomed with, being certified platinum within a week via a deal made with American mobile network provider Sprint, which is also a stakeholder in Tidal. This is not the first time such as happened though, in 2013 Jay-Z made a deal with Samsung that ensured that his album Magna Carta Holy Grail would be platinum on release.
In the words off his Diamonds From Sierra Leone (REMIX) verse
I’m not a businessman; I’m a business, man!
Lest we forget…
Going back to where it started. After the 2014 Met Gala when Solange attacked Jay Z, rumours started flying around citing that Solange had found out that Jay-Z was cheating on her sister. He would later admit it in the opening song, Kill Jay Z
You egged Solange on
Knowin’ all along, all you had to say you was wrong
What’s in a name?
The title of the album stems from the title track, which apparently Jay Z woke up at 4:44AM to write. This eventually became the theme that the album would center on. The number 4 in itself has also a lot of significance in Jay Z and Beoyonce’s life.
- Their birthdays are on the 4th (December 4th for Jay and September 4th for Bey)
- They have matching tattoos on their ring finger of the roman numeral IV (which is four)
- The middle name of their daughter, Ivy, is the phonetic spelling of the roman numeral IV.
- They got married on April 4th (April is the fourth month of the year)
It Ain’t All Kumbaye
On November 19, 2016, during a Sacramento Tour Stop for the Saint Pablo Tour, Kanye went on a rant directed at Beyoncé and JAY-Z.
“Beyoncé, I was hurt ‘cause I heard that you said you wouldn’t perform unless you won Video of the Year over me, and over ‘Hotline Bling,’” he said. “JAY-Z, call me brah. You still ain’t call me. JAY-Z, call me. Ayy brah, JAY-Z I know you got killers, please don’t send ‘em at my head, just call me. Talk to me like a man.”
Just two days after this rant, Kanye was taken to UCLA Medical Center for psychiatric evaluation and placed under observation after suffering from exhaustion and sleep deprivation.
Jay Z responded with the following lines in Kill Jay Z,
You walkin’ around like you invincible
You dropped outta school, you lost your principles
I know people backstab you, I felt bad too
But this ‘fuck everybody’ attitude ain’t natural
But you ain’t a saint, this ain’t kumbaye
But you got hurt because you did cool by ‘Ye
You gave him 20 million without blinkin’
He gave you 20 minutes on stage, fuck was he thinkin’?
“Fuck wrong with everybody?” is what you sayin’
But if everybody’s crazy, you’re the one that’s insane

Love it or hate it, you can’t deny that Jay-Z is still as relevant as he was a decade ago.
