I first got to know about Dereck Mpofu when he did Chisikana Changu Zimbabwe where he personified Zimbabwe to be the love of his life. Though the song was critically-acclaimed the video was met with mixed reviews.
2017 sees Mr. Mpofu return with Mari (Unonaka Iwe), which is popularly known as “Unonaka”, a Shona word for tasty. Dreck talks about love of our lives, MONEY. It has become the reason we have early mornings and late nights. We try to get it by all means necessary, even beyond our moral compasses.
When we do get money, oh is it sweet. No pleasures or fantasies are beyond reach, so we get addicted, spending it to the last cent, then the cycle continues.
It was only right to include Harare’s ultimate hustler’s hub, the (in)famous Ximex mall area, although now a car park the surrounding area is filled with hustlers who can get you anything from phones, cars, clothes to other expensive “stuff”.
Hailed as the new-age Jabu Khanyile, Dereck Mpofu is set to leave an imprint in the industry.
