A new season of 24, without Jack Bauer, hmmmmm. Those were big shoes to fill. Corey Hawkins (you may remember him as Straight Outta Compton’s Dr. Dre) plays Eric Carter, the new protagonist for this spin-off of the hit-series 24.
I’m guessing since 24: Live Another Day (or 24 Season 9, Day 9, depending on your location) had 12 episodes. 24 also happens the second series I binge-watched, after Prison Break, so yeah it kind of has a soft spot with me and I was eager to see this new spin-off.
Whether or not Jack Bauer will return is anyone’s guess but Tony Almeda is back. He was the focus of the short film 24: Solitary, whose timeframe is just after the events of 24: Live Another Day. Watching that will give a clear picture of his role in Legacy.
An awkward sub-plot is the “love triangle” between Eric, his wife Nicole and his brother Issac. Issac claims Eric “stole his girl”. This sub-plot is flimsy at best at the back story is only partially formed.
The villains were a bit meh too. Jadella, after not choosing to follow his father’s footsteps suddenly decides to do so after his murder? There are so many holes in that story. What is Nasari’s deal anyway? I also noticed similarities with the first season of 24. Son of villain avenges father and even the “main character dies” bit. Too many characters for just 12 episodes.
The “CTU mole” angle has been done more times that we’d care to remember. Hopefully they will skip on that on the next season.
Early on in the season we see Eric mimic some of Jack’s attributes but they do build on his character later . Like I said, big shoes to fill.
The ending though, feels rushed. It seems like the whole first season was a test run, hence the 12 episodes, in case things went downhill. After watching the 11th episode you would think that you were going to 2 to 3 episodes worth of a finale. This did not happen. Instead we got one of the most underwhelming climaxes of the current TV season.
As a spin-off it does alright but the noticeable plot-chopping does not inspire confidence in the franchise. Meanwhile Kiefer Sutherland is the POTUS in Designated Survivor.
