When you reach a certain age you are EXPECTED to have offspring. I’m sure that in my high school class I am of the few who do not have such yet. There’s nothing as cute as a baby right?
When a man and woman (or male and female) have unprotected copulation we expect pregnancy, right? For some just fornicating this can be a good thing to not get pregnant. It’s another thing when you’re married and you start wondering if you are shooting blanks.
Nine months after the wedding pregnancy signs are already expected lest people start asking questions. Yes, the African community is nosy like that.
In Africa though the blame is usually given to the woman as male infertility is a taboo. In some instances the wife’s younger virgin sister is given to the husband to facilitate an heir. A lot of woman rights activists may be up in arms but this but these are just cultural practices.
The same would be done if the man is suspected to be sterile, his brother would have to step and “fill the void”.
There are cases though were both husband and wife are infertile.
Before I explain further let me drop some statistics
While infertility may seem unbearable there are a couple of options available, if you have a strong wallet, that is
This is the simplest way. In the African context this usually happens when one of the spouse’s siblings passes away and leaves minors with no one to take care of them. They will however keep their original surnames.
IVF (in vitro fertilization)
Now this is for those with serious buck. Sperm is placed with unfertilized eggs in a Petri dish; the aim is fertilization of the eggs. The embryo is then placed in the uterus to begin a pregnancy. Sometimes the embryo is frozen for future use (cryopreserved). Babies born via this method are called test-tube babies. If the wife’s uterus is unsuitable there’s also the issue of getting a surrogate mother.
We all want descendants that carry on the family name and the process may be more stressful than expected and may lead to breakups and divorce.
Going into a marriage both parties also have to consider such possibilities.
